Holst, in her book Canine Reproduction, states that a study she did with Beagles showed that bitches bred at and before ovulation had 55% males while bitches that were bred one to two days after ovulation had 35% male pups. She didn't know if this was just a coincidence or whether it indicated a distinct tendency. I will say that whenever we badly wanted a girl from a particular mating, we did vaginal smears and tried to follow her theory of breeding at or after ovulation. It did greatly increase the number of females in our litters when we did.
