It is suggested that the fact that the Y chromosome is smaller than the X,
the genes that are found on the X but are not there on the Y means that the
male will be more susceptible to inheriting recessive genetic defects found
on the mother's X chromosome but not on the male Y which is lacking part of
the genetic material because there are no opposing genes to mask it.

Hemophilia is a perfect example. Queen Victoria was a carrier of hemophilia.
One of her sons was a hemophiliac. Several of her daughters were carriers
and spread the gene throughout the royal families of Europe. He daughter,
Alexandra, married Nicholas of Russia and produced four daughters and one
hemophiliac son. Since the whole family were slaughtered during the
Bolshevik Revolution, it is not know which, if any, of the girls were also
carriers. I must admit to not having the factual numbers at hand, but this
is the basic story. The sex chromosomes and their influences are a very
interesting study.
