Hi List-
The shavings I use for both Cavalier and Golden litters are acquired at the pet
store-they are pet/bunny grade wood chips, as opposed to sawdust. You can get a bale
( 2
cubic feet) for about $9.00 (inflated Los Angeles prices). They are dust free, and the
"cleanest" (again, dust wise) brand is Long Beach Brand. I often add cedar chips (much
more costly at $14.00 for one cubic foot) to the mix to improve stink control-an issue
with a litter of ten or eleven Golden pups! I do find the cedar can irritate the eyes
if
too much is added and is also much less absorptive, so go light on it....adding cedar
chips to kitty litter is also a nice smell masker.
After the initial novelty wears off ( one day or so) the pups don't seem to
chew/ingest
the shavings, and I've never had respiratory problems...the shavings do cling to fur
and
you spend alot of time vacuuming up shavings...still less work than daily baths. The
pups LOVE to race around a box of fresh shavings-like warm snow for them!
I also use the shavings in my outdoor puppy yard, as the floor is mostly painted
concrete. Puppy clients report that they have been able to "train" the pups to go in
one
area of their yard if they start with laying shavings in that area, as this is what the
pups are accustom to going on (well, Golden pup clients, anyway!).
