Laura wrote Most of you seem quite comfortable with the way Cavaliers are today--so honestly, how much worse does it need to be before you become uncomfortable and feel the need to start testing annually, sharing the results, so that changes can be made to benefit Cavaliers?
Laura Lang Roycroft Cavaliers Hi Laura, what can I say to make you understand. I have never to my knowledge bred a puppy with slipping (luxating) patella, I would be shocked if one of my pet owners told me that a puppy I bred died by the age of 10, I do not currently x-ray for hips but have also never had a problem with them. I switched to feeding BARF, 3 years ago in an effort to ensure my dogs have what is in my opinion, a high quality diet. We now have an eye specialist visiting a centre 3 hours (one way) drive away annually and every dog I have was tested (& cleared) and my dogs are asusciltated when I visit a Vet and I will not breed from any affected dogs. In answer to your statement <<Most of you seem quite comfortable with the way Cavaliers are today>> my answer to you is yes. I, like many other breeders I know, breed healthy, typical Cavaliers that have that wonderful Cavalier temperaments that live on average to around 12 years of age. They become lap warmers to elderly owners, playmates for kids or a companion to a person on their own or what ever else they need to be to be the delightful companion animal they are. I am sick of being preached at, that by not having the ability or wish or need, to have my dogs dopplered, or scanned or blood work done etc that that makes me a bad breeder. I will let the health of my dogs speak for itself because it will stand up to scrutiny.
