My vet told me that when he went through vet school the students were given one hour of nutrition and one hour of reproduction. What he knows now he learned from breeders or from trial and error (he is a successful dog breeder and exhibitors, himself). Now, if your vet's practice is primarily a pet oriented one, how could he be expected to gain the necessary knowledge of these two fields?
