I have Cresteds & I wish they would get away from the kneeling/stacking as
well. One of my Cresties is wonderful at free stacking and I never get on
my knees with her even if all the rest around me are on their knees. She
can stack herself up wonderfully and she looks great that way with her tail
wagging and an alert expression on her face.
My other guy needs some assist at times but I work on getting a free stack
from him as well. I have gone on my knees with him but really prefer to
not show my toy dogs this way. Sometimes it's the only way to keep him
still for any length of time.

I am glad to hear that not kneeling is acceptable in the Cavalier ring.

Where did the habit of kneeling & hand stacking toy dogs get started in the
AKC toy ring? Are there toy breeds that this is the only way to show them
in the AKC ring?
