Hi, Kim,
        I think that things like impacted anal glands and allergies can start a
behavior going that turns into a compulsive one.  We have one girl here
who has chronic yeast problems and she does similar things like barber
her feet.  I do find that taking one of those satellite toys that can be
stuffed with biscuit to occupy her will break that cycle for short
periods.  Any chew toy with enough appeal might work similarly. Taking
walks and doing other things of higher interest also seem to help.
Brian Kilcommons talks a lot about OCD; there might be something on his
