Hi Pam. I believe that the PennHip people say that an xray done at 5-6 months renders 'permanent' status, whereas OFA can only give a 'permanent' status rating at or after 24 months. I had a 10 month old boy prelimed once and received an OFA good on the prelim. He didn't pass his OFA at 28 months and came back with a reading of mild dysplasia in one hip. I know that PennHip requires anesthesia and involves considerably more manipulation than OFA, but other than that, I don't know much about it. They have a web site that gives a lot more information. I think that the basic concept is that, using the PennHip method, the xray will show the dysplastic changes much sooner than the standard OFA xray. Myra Savant
