Liz - My little Callie has always had excessive tearing -- her little face is
nearly always wet. I had our general vet check them and the dye test seemed
to indicate that the ducts were blocked. When she was finished teething, and
it was still present (about 8 mos. old, I think) I took her to the doggie
ophthalmologist for testing. The result was that Callie's tear ducts are
open and normal. The problem is twofold: Callie's eyes are more prominent
than they should be and are pressing on the ducts, essentially closing them
(which is why the first test gave a false reading of blocked ducts); and she
produces a large amount of tears (according to the doctor, some dogs just do
this). Since there was no physical problem, it's just something we all have
learned to live with. Of course, this condition requires great diligence on
my part. I need to wash her face at least once a day and keep close watch
for infection or other skin problems. Thankfully, the tears don't fall out
at night so her little face does get to dry out for a few hours each day.
For me it's just another part of owning Cavaliers.
