Sarah F's advice and process-description was very helpful (and I hope I
never need to use it!). And thanks, Judy, for your clarification -- I see
now that's what I've been doing all along! (referring people to individual
breeders and/or the clubs). What both Gerri and Barb said makes sense too;
like many others, I hope (though I'm skeptical) that we'll all live to see
the day when petshops view Cavaliers as unprofitable inventory... Re
Carol's response (to Laura) that many people simply do what's "easier,"
Yes, I know many bright, accomplished people who suddenly go hair-raisingly
stupid when it comes to getting a pet. Probably all of you have seen this.
Despite everything I've told them (reasons to talk to reputable breeders and
reasons to avoid petshops/puppymills), and the articles, websites and names
I've provided, and the research I've done *on their behalf and at their
request* (even into health issues, local/national club contacts and breeders
for *other* breeds), some have wound up buying from a petshop anyway.
Sometimes this was "on impulse," sometimes it was sheer laziness, and
sometimes it turned out the person was "intimidated" by the idea of talking
to a conscientious breeder. It's discouraging but once in a while we do get
through to someone...
