This is so true, my Berkeley who is a bit over 2 now, as a puppy he chewed everything
in site, and I started every morning with a mile to mile and half walk - yes at 5:45am
on an extenda lead so he can run a little....and then we have a routine that we play
ball while I am getting ready for work, I throw it down the hall and he retrieves and
returns it - this is for about 15 minutes - constantly - and it wears him out - he
isn't crated during the day and I leave him a cookie when I leave for work, he is
waiting on top of his grooming table looking out the window for me when I get home.
Nothing destructed, of course occasionaly a pillow is off the bed...hormones. He is a
very energetic guy so I try to wear him out in the morning as much as possible - it
works!

This pup obviously is not getting enough exercise - before being left to
'occupy himself' for a while --
The ol' adage " a tired pup is a good pup" comes to mind -
I would definitely put him somewhere he could not get out of and/or
where he couldn't harm anything -
I would run him / play with him / make sure he was good & well exercised
- and then put him in the crate / pen - with a buster cube and/or kong
to occupy him -
I might start with leaving him for only a short time - and then give him
lots of praise & reward for behaving well --
Then build up to leaving, coming in to check on him, leave again -
Gradually you'll be able to leave him for longer & longer -- but do be
sure to keep him confined - until you are SURE he is going to behave --
it may be a LONG time before he is dependable loose in the home --

Best of luck!
Joan
