To begin..that quote isn't mine. I think there are "precious few" BIS's in many breeds...and many are sound and lovely for their breed..just not exciting or flashy enough (for some) to go BIS. Just ask Puli people for one example...
Your "long time mentor" was incorrect when it comes to Cavaliers..lose the type and it's damn difficult if not impossible to get back. With Cavaliers you get type (if you're lucky) and then work on movement. And it goes without saying I'm not suggesting you breed crippled animals.
