That is because movement is based not only on structure, but on muscle mass
and tightness of ligaments, etc. We are all built to be able to compensate
for inadequacies, and some are able to do a much better job of it than
others. But a truly good moving dog WILL be structurally correct in all
ways. There WILL be movement problems if it is not--subtle--but still
there.

It is VERY possible to be extremely structurally correct and totally lack
type-after all, all the other breeds have the ability to have good structure
and move correctly.

I've thought a long time about how to judge while in the ring. Type first,
structure/movement second; structure/movement first, type second; or the
whole dog?

I think it would be nearly impossible to judge everything equally--we are
not computers. IMO I believe to do so one just might need to fault judge
which is not the way one should be judging!

In the end I decided if I judged I would probably lean the same direction
that I pick puppies--a tendency to choose the prettiest, typiest puppies
first, and as they grow only keep the ones that move well. This is not to
say I won't keep a puppy whose head (or something) isn't quite right but is
EXTREMLY good in some other way--it is just my tendency to pick by type
first.

And remember, if one cuts a class by type, then looks for the ones who move
right and can't find any--you CAN choose to not award a first place ribbon!
How I wish more judges would *remember* that!! Most feel they are obligated
to award points no matter what.

(Of course as nasty as some exhibitors can get, I guess I'm not THAT
surprised!)
