My gut feeling is that this had something to do with the heart--I think it unlikely it was a stroke although anything is possible. It is possible it could have been ruptured chordae tendinae. I specifically know of a documented dog that had absolutely NO murmur by both auscultation and color doppler who ruptured all the chordae tendinae on one side literally *overnight* (and survived) so no evidence of MVD need be there for this to happen. Usually, but not always though, the dog lives longer than 15 minutes, but I suppose if both sides of the mitral valve blew out at once, 15 minutes might be right. It could also have been an electrical problem/arrhythmia such as what happens sometimes to students and athletes that suddenly collapse and die. I know of several Cavaliers who have had problems with arrhythmias and have had pacemakers inserted.
