We've had several that would retrieve. There was even a son of Jewel that would flush and retrieve birds for his owner's husband. His mom, Jewel, always caught any of our chickens that had flown the coop. She would hold them for us to take from her and never killed any although there were a few lost tail feathers. It was a great help as anyone who has ever tried to catch a chicken can attest. Mary, our first one, would retrieve sticks from water. She would probably have retrieved birds, too, but we don't hunt.
Some lines have more "bird" instincts than others. It just depends.
