Sarah There are utility companies in some areas that 'require' the homeowner to read their meters & send in the information, so there is some basis for that - but - if they are not comfortable with you doing that - it is their call -- I had my electric meter moved to a new location on my house, so the meter reader could read it from outside the back yard fence. It was my expense -> I had to pay an electrician to move / install the 'pig tail' to run a new line from the meter to my panel box; the electric company moved the meter itself to its new location; and all this had to be coordinated with the various workers - Because it was my choice, my desire to not have strangers opening my yard gate, enter the yard, etc. I was more than willing to pay the cost to get my way <grin> I would think the gas company would be happy to arrange the move for you - to get the additional $$ <grin>, but ...sounds like they are being quite difficult with you. I would guess it would be possibly as much as $100 to move it - maybe even more - there is the installation of pipe, checking for leaks, etc. - not to mention shutting everything down, then bringing it up again, bleeding the air out of the line(s) & re-lighting any / all pilot lights -- it really is more than one might think - Yes, they should be very used to the installation process, but .... moving / adding to a system does involve a bit of work! I have propane fired hot water + a 'fireplace' in my living room - and they came & installed a new line when I switched to a new supplier -- but that was done "free" with the guarantee I'd stay with that supplier at least a year -- LOTS of competition between suppliers <grin> Most places I know of that have piped in, natural gas only have one supplier - and they can be very difficult at times. Good luck in working with them! Joan Robinson
