I started with stacking, on a stack standing in front of him, I would reach
across with 2 fingers up and tap his tail down once with both fingers and make a
short "sssss" sound. Over time he just needed to see me hold up 2 fingers and
say "sss" and the tail would immediately go level. On a stack he is reliable
100% of the time for keeping his tail level. Then we moved on to gaiting. Dog on
my left, lead in my right and a light stick (yard stick works well) that is long
enough to reach from my left hand without being out stretched to his tail. Hold
the stick steady and firm just above the point of where you want the tail to be
carried and begin gaiting. The dog's tail will go up and as soon as it touches
the stick it will go down on its own. Do not tap with the stick, just keep it
level, it is a self correction (like when using Happy Legs to train a stack). As
soon as the tail makes contact with the stick say "sss" and continue on. Now
when gaiting I make short "sss" sounds while going around the ring. He hears it
but the judge doesn't. He is reliable about 75% when gaiting for keeping the
tail level, granted I spent much more time working on the tail in a stack than I
did with gaiting.
