Hi Sandy -

About 10 years ago a study was done in France that concluded that
ivermectin could be successfully used to treat dogs with heartworm - by
continuing to treat on a monthly basis no larva would be able to mature and
the mature worms already residing in the heart would live live out their
natural life spans and die one at a time. This poses less risk of clots to
the affected dog than the traditional treatment which kills ALL of the
adult worms at once. It also can be used to treat dogs that have liver
problems that preclude using the traditional treatment. I do not believe
that a larger dose was called for, and I think that oral dosing would work,
just as it does for prevention.
