I wasn't talking about a virus. My babies didn't show any whitehead or anything like that. I disinfect the umbilical site on all our puppies so they heal over very nicely. Each time that we've had this in one of our puppies it was diagnosed as an infection that entered from the umbilicus at birth and the puppy showed no signs of being sick until two weeks of age. This isn't a guess on my part, but an actual diagnosis from the vet. Well, at least two different vets since one was in the 1980s and the other puppy was in the 1990s. Both vets said that the only way to prevent it was to give amoxi to all puppies at birth. The last time it happened we were able to save the puppy because we caught it in time to give amoxi. It was something about the way the tummy felt that tipped us off. All the best, Susan Cochran
