My only experiency with campylobacter is in humans, where it can cause a
nasty hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Here is what the Center for Disease
Control says about campylobacter jejuni:

"Even one drop of juice from raw chicken meat can infect a person. One way
to become infected is to cut poultry meat on a cutting board, and then use
the unwashed cutting board or utensil to prepare vegetables or other raw or
lightly cooked foods."

So obviously the dog could have become infected from raw meat, particularly
if it was poultry, and that would be my first suspect. The BARF people say
that campylobacter will not harm a normal dog. But if was carried by an
asymptomatic dog to a puppy.....well, a puppy doesn't always have quite as
developed of an immune system as a "normal dog".

Campylobacter can also be carried by wild birds, so there is always the
theoretical possibility that the dogs picked it up from bird droppings.

Campylobacter can occasionally be transmitted from dogs to people, so remind
your children about good handwashing after handling the dogs for the next
couple days.
