I'm coming into this late because I've not had time to read all of the
list mail that has been posted during the last week, so forgive me if I
am saying something that has already been said.

I've read the recommendations that a barking dog be sprayed in the face
with water. I haven't tried this so I don't know if it works, but I
have another solution to this problem which absolutely *does* work.

Here's another one. If you have a dog barking incessantly and
inappropriately, put a few coins into a plastic water bottle and close
the lid, or put a few coins into a pop can and tape the opening of the
lid shut. Wait until your dog starts the barking behavior that you want
to stop, then lob the can or the plastic bottle right in front of
him/her. Make sure you do this from someplace where the dog can't see
you, such as around a corner out of the dog's sight. The sound of the
container with the coins landing on the floor is soooooo offensive, and
if you lob the container in front of the dog from a place where you
can't be seen, the dog will think this awful sound has come from the
heavens and it only takes a time or two to stop the barking.

The same principle applies if you have a dog that barks early in the
morning. Just keep a coin filled can or bottle by your bedside table.
If the dog which exhibits this offensive behavior is one that stays in
your bedroom, just reach for the rattley can or bottle and lob it in
the direction of the dog. It works!

Hope this helps.
