Hi, Glenn,
Well yes........and no. Certainly, someone with thirty dogs is going
to have to do some things differently than someone with a few dogs. I
don't think that they can all sleep in the owner's bed. <G>
(Well...maybe.........go ahead and laugh, but I've heard of one breeder
who bought a second king sized bed for her bedroom so her dogs could do
just that.)
However, the salient points remain the same. If the DDAL decision holds
up on appeal, the hobby breeder who groups dogs together in social
groups will have to separate them in kennels; each will be individually
required to be placed and kept in its own mathamatically correct
enclosure. As Cavaliers are a companian dog, and should, in the opinion
of most people, be kept in a home or social environment it is my opinion
that putting them in separate kennels will be detrimental to their well
being. Additionally, while I am inspected (as I live on a horse farm)
by the animal control folks and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, I am
never happy to have inspectors tromp through my house after going to the
local dog shelter. (Fortunately, these kind folks know this about me).
USDA inspectors spend more than their share of time at puppymills; I
surely don't want them dragging parvo and other horrors through my home
on their shoes.
Additionally, my vet and I have agreed upon a vaccination protocol which
drops one or two vaccines and allows me to give 1/2 dose vaccines for
some immunizations. I would no longer be able to design my own
immunization protocol in accordance with new information and in concert
with my own vet.
Under DDAL/AWA the dogs are required to wear identification at all
times. I'm honestly not sure if a standard tag will be required or
collars.
In short; most reputable Cavalier breeders (including those with many
more dogs than have I) exceed the requirements of the AWA (as regulated
by APHIS) at this point; we will be forced to regress if this is upheld
and enforced to the letter as DDAL would so have it.
