Hi, Jo Ann,
I think here, that you have hit the nail on the head. There is a
difference between those who spent a lifetime studying Cavaliers only
and those who study and understand the world of the canine purebred
while concentrating on their own breed. The same people who always,
without variance, leave an AKC show before group or BIS after the
Cavalier classes have finished because there is "nothing left to see"
(or never go to an AKC show because they are not interested in other
dogs but only in Cavaliers) develop a short sighted attitude that they
are exempt or different than "other" purebred dog breeders.
I am relatively new to purebred dog breeding, but see how much there is
to be learned from all purebred dog fanciers. As I came from breeding
horses, I cannot imagine not having an interest in, for instance, Arabs
while breeding Welsh ponies.
Our Cavaliers are wonderful; but so are other dogs. We have a
relationship to the breeder of golden retrievers and bloodhounds whether
or not we acknowledge the kinship. It is the same insular attitude that
assumed that the corporate veil of a private club could, by itself,
prevent the advent of puppy mills and establish its own laws and call
them ethics.
Well, the veil is about to be pierced. The hue and cry which ensues
after the first member is forced to remove their dogs from their home
and place them in separate structures in kennels might bring home the
point that old club members, too, are subject to more than the ethics
rules of a private club.
