Hi Carolyn:

I made this post to another list and should have done so on this as well.

I had one of my puppy owner call me last week. She had taken he little guy
to the vets for the regular heartworm meds. As she says she was never
really good about remembering to give the pill once a month she thought that
the injectable 6 in 1 would be better.

The injectable is a gel not a liquid and within a few minutes he was
vomiting. The vet rushed him into the back and 25 minutes later when she
saw him he was on oxygen and an IV drip. He had collapsed. He then spend
the next 3 days in the emergency hospital on oxygen and IV then he started
to bleed from his rectum which took a while to get it to stop.

He is home now, shaved throat are, both legs and his rear.
She has to take him back weekly for testing on his liver and they had no
idea how his immune system will be nor his liver nor how this might affect
how long he lives. He will be 3 on August 31st.

One thing to remember is this is injectable so there is no taking it back it
has to go through the whole system. It might not happen to others, but for
me I would not take a chance. I have phone all my puppy owners and they in
turn have told their vets as did I. By the way her vet sent all remaining
gel back to the company.

Myself, I test yearly only the dogs being shown as we do not have a very
high incident rate here. I would test yearly and only do meds should they
develope heartworm as the treatment now for it is a lot safer than the
poision we put into these little guys.

Hope this helps.
