Judi: To be honest all I really know is from my vet who tells me that treatment has improved 100% from when dogs first got heartworm and that if caught early enought it is as easy to treat as fleas are.
Seems to me years ago they had to use arsnic as part of the treatment which is why it was so dangerous to let your dogs go without the preventative meds. In out area we have only a 1% chance of contracting heartworm but in an area about 1-1/2 hours from me it is a very high risk area. Sorry can't be of more help on the actual treatment but my vet is very cauious so I go on what she tells me.
