July 13, 2002 San Diego Rescue Update

As of Wednesday, all of the dogs (of both breeds) from Animal Control
the Medical Ward and all mothers and puppies in the Quarantined Maternity
 Ward have been released
to Cavalier and English Toy Spaniel Rescue. They were removed from the
 Shelter with record speed.

We still have some Cavaliers and ET's at the San Diego Humane Society
but I have been working with them to release some to rescue. They are doing
all the evealations there and will let me know what we may have. They have
a
very different apdoption policy and are able to screen families much
better.
They also require any pets in the home come down to interact with the
adoptive dog to see if they match. The family is required to attend classes
at the Humane Society after adoption.

We had great volunteers from all the Clubs, working together to get all
the dogs groomed and bathed. The dogs loved it! I must say I even enjoyed
the Yorkies, this was my first chance to spend time with the breed. They
still smell, it will take many washing to get the odor and staining out of
their coat from being in such filth.

San Diego has been saturated with media coverage. I have been on two
morning TV programs and have taken one Cavalier and one ET, from the seized
dogs, so the public will understand the difference. We were also able to
talk about the medical problems and the lack of house training problems
they
will have if they adopt from this group. There are over 500 applications
on
file with more streaming in hourly. In an unprecedented move, the County
of San Diego used a new Special Needs Application using parts of the
adoption application from out Cavalier Rescue. A far more detailed
application than they had used in the past. Application will be reviewed
and sorted and put into a drawing for the number of dogs that will be
avalibale for adoption. They have assured us that any dog who bounces back
into the system will automatically go to breed rescue.
As of today we have all the dogs fostered and have homes ready for the
ones we might get from the Humane Society. I have to tell you all the
people
at both facilities have been great to work with and they have been very
loving and kind to our breeds. They are so happy to see some go home and
they are just as concerned about the families that are going to adopt as we
 are.
I will still be going down each day to help sort out the adoption
applications and work with them in any way they need me to make the
adoption
process go smoothly. Each family that adopts a Cavalier will get names and
phone numbers of people to call if they have questions about their new dog.
Also information about the breed clubs.
I am so pleased to have had the oppornity to work with kind and
generous
people that had only the interest of our breeds at heart and didn't care
what club you belong to. We were together as one. I want to thank them
all.
But I have to add a very special thanks to my dear friend, Joy Smith,
she has been there with me every day for over seven weeks. She has given me
so much help, had great ideas, took on any job that was needed and was my
moral support during a very difficult time. To Joy, I send my love and
gratitude. I am blessed to have her as a friend.
             Jean
