I like the idea of half of a 400 crate, and a baby play pen, or a puppy play pen. I bought a puppy play pen and just went out to look at the brand, and I can't find it. I think it came from Northern something. It is plastic, very strong and not heavy at all, and the best thing is that you can add panels to it. On the other hand, unless you are worried that your other dogs will bother the puppies, just mommy in a crate would be fine, wouldn't it? And with week old puppies, that crate could sit on a bed, where mommy could get in and out.
