Dear Betsey,

It is probably a chromosomal irregularity where the ability to produce color
in one eye was lost during either the developement of the whelp from an
embryo or the maturation of the sperm or egg cells. Usually this will not be
inheritable. I have only seen it once in a Tri-color puppy that did not
survive to 8 weeks of age.

Sometimes during replication in the formation of eggs and sperm, the
chromosomes will make an error in splitting and instead of dividing equally
in halves, one or the other of the halves will get more or less gene alleles
than it should. What you get is a defect that was not inherited, but was
accidental. I suspect that is what the blue eye/ black eye combination
usually is in Cavaliers.

However, there are some dog breeds that are bred for differing eye color so
sometimes it can be inheritable. It never occured again so I suspect that
it was accidental in the Tri pup that we had.

All the best,
Susan Cochran
