In response to Jan's query:

This has always been the "Bible" for me:

            Canine Reproduction: The Breeder's Guide
by Phyllis Holst Alpine Publications Nov. 1999 (2nd
printing).

Written by a veterinarian and breeder, this book takes you through
whelping and delivery, nutrition during pregnancy, neonatal problems
and rearing--and gives a great overview of canine reproduction in
general. I find myself referring to it time and again. It is that rare
readable combination of scientific treatise and practical advice.
