I also have the Canine Reproduction; it is indeed a good reference. Another good one
is "Book of the Bitch". There are also some good whelping videos, my favorite is the
one that has the panel of breeders at the end, each from a different breed of dog,
that discuss common whelping problems they have encountered and how they handle them.
I think it is described in Dogwise as having the panel of breeders' discussion in it.
Your best resource will also be other breeders who you can call, who don't mind being
woken up to help whelp in person, or give phone assistance, and of course, your vet.
Dogs and humans never seem to go into labor in the daylight hours....I've spent many
sleepless nights "whelping" humans (and actually am on call tonight, delivered 3
today....)
