Dear Laura,

It sounds like your dog is feeling the affects of old age and is using the
pace as a means to relieve stress on his body when he's in motion. When you
combine it with the shaking of the back legs, I would suspect hip dysplasia
or possibly a back problem, arthritc conditions caused by advancing years. I
have a 13 yr old golden with bad hips and his back legs sometimes shake when
he is standing still. A compression of the spinal chord at some point might
also cause a similar action.
Even though your dog may have been clear of hip dysplasia as a young dog,
it can occur in advancing years. I have had several goldens that were OFA
good that had signs of hip dysplasia past the age of 10. I am having signs
of it too but I'm not telling you how old I am in dog years. At any rate,
either of these problems could cause pacing to relieve stress on the joints
and back. Rimadyl helps with the pain and inflammation for the hips. Baby
aspirin also helps. I'm not sure what they might give if it's in the spine.

Hope this helps,
Barbara
