Hi Diane: You wrote: "I have friends who supplement with Flax Oil, and Hemp Oil and other Omega fatty acid oils and supplements. My question is does anyone use olive oil? I am not looking to add a supplement the dogs don't need, I was just curious if there would be any benefit or harm with the use of olive oil. Thanks."
Olive oil is is beneficial for heart and cancer diseases, is an Omega 9 EFA, and is beneficial in diluting or balancing Omega 6s (which we usually have plenty of). IMO, rotating the oils to include each of their various benefits, is the best practice. Also, use the extra virgin, cold pressed olive oil. This oil also does not go rancid BTW, Canola oil is high in Omega 9s (but also has high amounts of 3s and 6s), but my concern with it is whether it is genetically altered or not. What I'm not sure about is whether it is a long chain, medium chain or short chain fatty acid. I believe they are medium chain. Fish or marine oils are long-chain and this is what our diets are usually most deficient in. So, IMO, do use extra virgin olive oil, but maybe also supplement (alternately) with fish oils. I like to use olive oil, Udo's oil (because it has various plant source oils) plus wild salmon oil. I am currently looking into seal oils.
