What I meant was that all animals, which includes dogs, must have protein in their diets. It is a must. That said, there are situations that some dogs are allergic/intolerant of specific proteins, i.e., chicken, beef, etc. And some breeds that have ceilings for how much protein they can utilize/tolerate, i.e., dalmations. And some dogs, i.e. those with kidney failure, need to have their protein sources restricted. But they all still need some form of protein. Even a dog fed a vegetarian diet must have protein in some fashion in order to survive. When I had to cut down on the protein (meat) fed to my boxer with renal problems, I was concerned that she wasn't getting enough. My holistic vet said that older dogs usually need less protein anyway and that her muscle mass and strength indicated that she was getting enough protein. Regular blood tests confirm this. Hope this clarifies my original statement.
