Since there have been many posts regarding protein requirements, I have yet
another question regarding protein.....there is a 4-month+ old puppy boy who
is having "liver problems", according to the vet. Apparently, he is not
growing as he should and blood work-up now indicates that his liver is not
processing enough protein. He was the runt of the litter (4 oz. at birth),
thus has always been on the small side. Approximately 3 weeks ago, his
owner indicated that he vomited on a Friday morning, but no other
indications of illness until the following Monday afternoon, at which time
she took him to her veterinarian. He was extremely dehydrated at that point
and had to be placed on IV fluids. Every test imaginable was performed on
the puppy (blood work-up, X-rays, sonograms, etc.) but at that time, they
could find nothing wrong.

Suddenly this week, he has again become ill, and he is to be taken to Texas
A&M tomorrow for more tests. The owner has been informed by her current vet
that the puppy will probably either a) have to have surgery (not sure of the
type); b) have a sonogram (to jolt the liver into action??); or c) have to
be put down. Can anyone tell me if they have ever heard of this type of
problem and if so, is it a genetic problem or would the initial illness and
severe dehydration have caused liver problems?

Any information regarding liver diseases or treatment would be appreciated.
