Dear Melva,
I have had this occur three times in three different cavaliers. Two had it
at the same time so we strongly suspected something bacterial or viral but
couldn't come up with a definitive answer. The vet put them on a course of
antibiotics but they required a second run of antibiotics. It eventually
cleared up. Of course if it is viral it antibiotics won't help. In the other
case, our dog needed to be put on steroids for an neck problem and our vet
(different vet) decided not to put her on antibiotics because he said it
seemed to be an inflammatory condition and if he was right the prednisone
would reduce the inflammation anways. Of course he followed up to make sure,
but she did get over it without the antibiotics. In each case, I gave a
soft diet for a while to ease the pain of swallowing. The vet also gave me a
high nutrient food in a tube for sick dogs. I also gave the dog those
nutrient supplement drinks like Boost. Now, when they recovered we did have
a period of convincing them that they didn't require any more special
treatment. Like you I had done a lot of hand feeding and coddling.
I hope your girl is soon on the road to recovery.

Barbara
