Well, not in San Francisco, but in a college dorm room and with a
grinning college freshman - eager to spread those wings of
independence. Oh, so scary for Mom! I'm excited for him, jealous as
all get-out, and more than a little anxious. I mean, sheesh, do you
think that he will remember that he's at university to STUDY and
LEARN and PREPARE himself for LIFE after childhood??? Nah, I
didn't think so, either... <sigh>

We'd said our good-byes earlier: he'd hugged his dad, waved good-
byes to his brother and sister, and PETTED all the dogs! (What a
good boy he is!!) And after we'd carried the last of his stuff to the
dorm, and set it down on his tiny bed (he's 6' 3", and he's supposed
to sleep on the twin x-long? poor kiddo!), he politely asked if I'd like
to be walked to my car. Trying to send me on my way, I'd queried?
That's when the grin really started blooming!

In the hallways and elevators of the dorm there were too many good
smells (microwave popcorn, cocoa), and too much noise (music,
laughter), and too many cute girls and friendly guys (read:
distractions!) for me to feel confident leaving Colin without me to be
there to guide him. Which, of course, is why he wanted to be a
gentleman and walk me to my car. Making sure that it started and I
was on my way home - away from him... Oh, woe is me.

To my credit - and surprise - I didn't cry on the drive home. Granted,
it's in the same state so it wasn't a long drive, and he'll often come
home for weekends; but still, he's gone!

After I walked in the door at home tonight, I plopped down on the
sofa and buried my face in a couple soft Cavalier bodies, and they
lovingly wiped my tears away. Hubby just kissed me almost laughing
at my long face, but the dogs body-hugged me; Comfort Spaniels,
yes indeed!
