Here I am with yet another "situation" I need your opinions on. I have friends (husband and wife) with 2 of my dogs. They have been renovating their "new home" for almost 3 years and were living in another house while working on this one. Two weeks ago they sort of moved into the new one, but Jan decided to stay in the NYC apartment (on Central Park West) with the dogs while some more finishing was done. Every night she and her husband would walk the dogs in the park and they were enjoying themselves a great deal. A few days ago she called me to tell me that her girl Woodie was suddenly acting a little spooked, but I have been slightly "indisposed" so she left a message and asked me to call her when I was feeling better. Yesterday she called and said that Woodie was shaking and hiding in the corner, etc. I called her back on her cell phone and she was in the park at the time and said she thought Woodie was better out of the apartment. I suggested that there might be a mouse in the barely inhabited apartment (with cartons, etc) that spooked her. Even though it is on the 36th floor it is an apartment hotel with a restaurant that could attract large mice (sometimes called rats but I am avoiding that terminology.) Jan liked that idea and decided to go home to the new house. Everything seemed fine for the first night, but tonight her husband called, equally concerned. Mid day Woodie started acting funny again. She does shake sometimes, but mainly she hides in corners. She goes in different parts of the house to be alone and this is definitely something she has never done. They have a built in cubby in the kitchen under Jan's desk and she spends much of the time there. By way of further explanation, this new home is 10 minutes from their old one. They have 6 acres behind a stone wall with beautiful grounds, etc. Every day Jan would take the dogs to the new house to hang out and take them with her to run errands and often into the city. So the problem can't be either the city noises or the new atmosphere of a strange new home since neither is a new to the dogs. I have no idea what the problem could be. Jan honestly is considering calling a pet psychic. Today her male dog stopped suddenly in the middle of a room and stared into the air. She called his name and he did not move til her "man" that works for her and lives with the family (named Rex, honestly) broke his trance by nudging him under the chin. He didn't even look at Rex as he walked toward him across the room. If the problem had not started in the city she would have thought the old house was haunted and the spirits did not like the fact that they have now moved in after it was uninhabited for 3 years. (This house does have an interesting history.) I suggested that take her to the vet. Shaking could mean some sort of pain. I guess the vet could check her out and take some blood. What do you think? Jan is bringing both dogs to my house tomorrow morning. They do spend a fair amount of time at my house and we thought we could see if they are relaxed here or still act sort of strange (actually the male is fine now.) This is sort of weird, but could turn out to be nothing more than a sprain or a pain. What do you think? Phyllis
