Peggy, In cavaliers, a Blenheim can only carry the red gene, even when his parents were Tri to Blenheim breeding. Blenheim and Rubies can only carry for red never black. Unless a Black & Tan or Tricolor is DOMINANT, they will always carry for red and black. I originally thought my Black & Tan male may be dominant because his Black & Tan father no matter if he was bred to a Ruby or a Blenheim, he produced only Black & Tan puppies. However, his son, Beethoven has produced Rubies and Black & Tan puppies so I know he carries for red. I hope this is helpful.
