I am playing devil's advocate here.Firstly, let me preface by saying that I love the naturalness of the cavalier but sometimes it seems that people think that a good dog with trimmed ears should automatically lose to an all natural dog even if that dog is inferior. There is a danger in that. In the case mentioned below, if the judge did this to each and every dog, I would say bravo. But some judges like to power trip.I would hope that the dog selected for breed was a superior or equal example. Selecting an inferior dog to make a point would not do the breed any good either. Another person on this list could confirm that a judge said she should "coat her dog" to improve its outline. Now 'coating' would be unnatural wouldn't? So would blow drying, using conditioners etc. On another list I once heard a respected English breeder comment on the use of the pumice stone to remove unwanted hair on the top of the head and foot furnishings. It's not scissors, so therefore it must not be trimming, I guess. I believe the term "neatening up" was used. I believe that the education of judges must be ongoing, but as exhibitors, I don't think we should hide behind the excuse that another dog won because it was artificially presented. Maybe that dog won in spite of being artificially presented and is really a superior example of the breed. Would you like to see an untrimmed 'natural' cavalier with a serious fault win over a dog with trimmed ears but wonderful conformation? I am not advocating trimming or artificial presentation but I am advocating that we should keep perpective.

The previous week he had judged Aussies at a show in WA state where there was fly in special from California who was supposed to win. She had done well under this judge before. He told me he felt up the dogs legs with his fingers and chalk puffed out all over. The breeder/owner said, "you aren't supposed to do that" and he said, "neither are you!" He gave the breed to a different dog. Also heard from another judge of an ethical choice he made. Some of them ARE judging dogs. > > Jan > > ========================================================= > "Magic Commands": > to stop receiving mail for awhile, click here and send the email: > mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?body=SET%20CKCS-L%20NOMAIL > to start it up gain click here: > mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?body=SET%20CKCS-L%20MAIL > > E-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] for assistance. > Search the Archives... http://apple.ease.lsoft.com/archives/ckcs-l.html > > All e-mail sent through CKCS-L is Copyright 2002 by its original author. > ========================================================= "Magic Commands": to stop receiving mail for awhile, click here and send the email: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?body=SET%20CKCS-L%20NOMAIL to start it up gain click here: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?body=SET%20CKCS-L%20MAIL E-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] for assistance.
