We had a discussion several weeks back about chilled semen breedings. I wanted to announce that I did have some (moderate) success with my own try at chilled. This morning I had a *litter* of one puppy born, a b/t female. Mom is a lightly marked blenheim, dad a b/t--dominant for wholecolor, but not for black. Puppy has only the tiniest bit of white on the chest--which will positively disappear, and a tiny dot on the chin--so essentially she will not be mismarked at maturity to any noticeable extent. She was 9 ounces at birth, very fat, healthy and vigorous. Now to hope she turns out typey and structurally nice!
Dad is CKCSC and AKC Ch. Falling Springs the Chairman--still MVD clear past age 5. I think chilled can be successful especially if certain things are done. I think it is important to try to get the semen collected, shipped and inseminated the same day and I think it is important to imseminate any way other than vaginally. Neither was done with this litter and we still had success--but I think the success rate and litter size would be dramatically improved with shorter times between collection and insemination and making it as easy as possible for the sperm to meet the egg. In this breed, it seems nearly all the really good success stories come when the semen is inseminated the day it is collected and especially when inseminated other than vaginally. When imseminating with chilled semen, it just might be a better idea to spend your money doing a single surgical A.I. rather than doing 2 chilled shipments and vaginal inseminations.
