Diane,
You may want to take a look at MailScanner. It works extremely well for me
and is highly configurable. And my number one  reason for using it is that
the developer has put together an install package that includes Spamassassin
and Clamav with the MailScanner install making it a real no-brainer
depending on distro. I'm running RH 9.0 and sendmail here. There may be some
issues with postfix and procmail that I don't know about. I ran the install
package with no problems and was up and running in less than 15 minutes.
Tweaking does take some time but the MailScanner, Spamassassin, and of
course this list are all very active and helpful.

You may want to post your message on the MailScanner list and see what
others using it in your configuration have to say.
