I'm not sure what you think is strange about it, it's simply a fact.

If someone has misconfigured a unix smtp server so that it's an open 
relay, is discovered by spammers and used to relay spam, that's an 
unfortunate situaton but what does that have to do the origin of the 
virus emails?
