I agree. We are going to look at moving away from Clean Access because of no
third party OOB support. But until now we couldn't justify the cost (and the
fact that the software could easily be loaded on new hardware in case of
failure), now with forcing us to buy appliances the third party vendors price
tag just became $20,000-$30,000 cheaper. An extra $20,000 and we will be able
to facilitate a years worth of maint, more licenses than we had with CCA, OOB,
and integration with our packetshaper as well as our firewall and IPS. Not to
mention we can't get Cisco to add SMP support for servers and non-super cam. I
have a quad processor cam and dual processor servers with cpus idle meanwhile
other cpus are sometimes hitting max load under file transfers and they are
3+Ghz CPUs. I am beginning to confuse the Cisco name with Apple. Both have good
ideas.......But execution is poor. Bradford here I come, good bye Cisco.

Jeremy,

You can’t tell me that Cisco is introducing features so advanced that the boxes
we have now would not be capable of running it. The boxes we run are nearly
identical to probably 50% of the people not running Cisco branded equipment, on
this list.

There have been other issues in the last year related to the NAC that have
caused me to start evaluating other options, this is just icing on the cake.
One big reason we didn’t switch this year was that we didn’t want to fuss with
new equipment… I can only see Cisco losing customers because of this.

Bruce and Michael,

I understand your concerns about your internal end-of-life plans vs Cisco
introducing the appliance, but lets be reasonable. All applications have
changing hardware requirements depending on the version you are using.

Changing to a Cisco appliance may have many advantages over third party
hardware especially when it comes to Cisco’s control over developing the
upgrade process, and in the long run it could be less expensive because of the
fact that the appliance is Cisco hardware and will have a longer end-of-life.

I am just knuckle dragging engineer so please contact your account team reps
for a full cost justification of migrating to an appliance. Then you can judge
if it makes sense, and you will have a short/long term cost justification for
management.

Regards,

Jeremy

Todd,

So, does this mean that those of us that are using our own hardware will either
need to re-purchase them with appliances or move to a different NAC solution?

That’s a great upgrade plan!

From Cisco Live (Networkers) here is what I learned -

All 4.5 and higher will require the new Cisco hardware

4.5 Due in late Fall (Oct/Nov)
4.6 Due in Spring (March/April)

Subject: Need to upgrade Server hardware....

So we run CCA software on our own hardware, have since before Cisco
purchased it. We are going to replace our hardware and so I went to the
Cisco website to check on supported hardware.

Is the supported hardware info up to date? We use Dell and they dont even
offer some of the supported hardware specified in the document. Also, does
CCA support quad-core processors?

Thanks for the help
