Hi Theodore -

 

Thanks for the advice. That actually sounds like it's spot on - twice
now the issue has arisen with failed Symantec updates (that includes my
inheritance of the problem while in Vermont). I've asked our Help Desk
to try this on the next "victim" of the issue who arrives. We'll soon
see if it is the culprit. Thank you again!

Sean,

It was a common problem on our campus as well with the same program.
Seems for some reason installs of Symantec randomly go haywire and block
those ports.  A full removal of the program using the removal tool from
symantec was required to fix the problem.  However we have switched to
Endpoint and have had no problems since, so I am unsure if the removal
tool is still active.  You will need to locate it on their website.
