Yeah, that's life when you're a systems admin... There are so many "private" interfaces you need to use to get your job done that the concept almost has no meaning. It's actually a bigger problem for Sun than it is sysadmins, c.f. /var/sadm/install/contents. So, yes, I can confirm, to change the name of the NIC that is currently in use (and can't be unused), the above method works - as long as you don't forget to rename dhcp.bge0 to dhcp.bugbear0 (if required.)
