Thanks for letting us know how you got on - I hadn't realized cqlsh itself had 
changed syntax! :(

Yes, running "apt-get update ; apt-get install ..." is a reasonable approach 
but you can actually just run "sudo clearwater-upgrade" - the 
clearwater-infrastructure package includes this script as part of its 
installation.

Note that this doesn't update Cassandra, but we haven't updated Cassandra yet.  
We are intending to move up to Cassandra 1.1.12 shortly, and will announce it 
in release notes when we do.

Can you provide more details on the "-Xss 228k" problem?  How does it manifest 
itself?  I don't think we've seen any instances of this ourselves.
