I think I would try disk=/dev/sdb bios=0x80 with boot=/dev/sdb and also use as much verbosity as you can (I think something like verbose=3 in lilo.conf might be appropriate, but that was from trying to read the .tex file in a terminal, so I might have got the wrong end of the stick there).
