Interesting. It's Clojure 1.2.0-master-SNAPSHOT as of last week: Clojure 1.2.0-master-SNAPSHOT user=> 0xff 255 user=> (byte 0xff) java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Value out of range for byte: 255 (NO_SOURCE_FILE:0)
