I'm not even sure what this means - especially in the context of programming 
languages. Industry and academia are orthogonal and have extremely different 
goals. Perhaps one might perceive them to be 'moving together' when industry 
uses a high percentage of programming language X and academia teaches new 
intakes language X. However, it would be crazy to attempt to perceive the 
direction of language research within a given academic institution by the 
languages it teaches to its undergraduates.
