Good points, Michael.
Further to these comments, beyond the fact
that most mirrors are much faster than the upload speeds offered by Telus and
Shaw (even when they are being slammed at times like this), those who are
currently offering up their systems to host FTP sites should bear in mind that
Telus has hard upload limits, which when breached will result in a nice big bill
the next month (so I'm told by a friend on Telus). Shaw has "soft" limits,
no extra charge, but rather if you go over them, they email you once, then they
call you once, then they shut off your service for a week (that I know because
I've gotten to the second stage in the past). So be careful when offering
up your line, you may be in for a bit of a surprise.

Why is this such an issue right now? Every major distribution
has _several_ high performance mirrors that will outperform anything
that we could put together based on P2P with our cable and DSL
lines. Yes when a new version of a distro comes out the mirrors
can be slow, but there are a couple of things to remember:
#1 There are some sites that mirror RedHat and Mandrake that
don't list themselves on the download pages... they usually perform very
well - especially during times like this. (try finding a mirror of a
mirror)
#2 Do any of us really _need_ the newest copy of RedHat or Mandrake
the day it comes out? Try waiting a couple of days and try again
:)
Just some stuff to think about.

Could we use some sort of P2P system to distribute the
load over a number of members? That way the bandwidth and storage
issues would not fall on just one of us.
